Natural Health Solutions: Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto is a fruit with great medicinal potential. Saw Palmetto extract is rich in fatty acids and phytosterols (the structural components of plant’s cell membranes) and offers many potential health benefits.
For the past two decades, the extract of Saw Palmetto has been popular for its ability to ease prostate symptoms, specifically those associated with an enlarged prostate, such as frequent urination. It has also been used to treat prostate infections. However, research into traditional use of Saw Palmetto tells a much more extensive story of how this plant has been used over the centuries.
The Mayans used Saw Palmetto as a tonic and Native American Seminoles used it as an expectorant and an antiseptic. Dr. H.W. Felter, author of The Eclectic Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics describes Saw Palmetto as “a nerve sedative, expectorant, and a nutritive tonic, acting kindly upon the digestive tract.”
While controlled scientific studies have not been conducted to prove Saw Palmetto’s effectiveness in these areas, there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence demonstrating its promise in these areas:
- As a natural diuretic, lowering blood pressure.
- Combating the effects of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) in women, specifically male-pattern hair growth.
- Reducing hair loss.
- Reducing acne
- Reducing severity of asthma and bronchitis
