Medications to treat an enlarged prostate can be very costly and at times unsuccessful. Natural health solutions like Saw Palmetto and Beta-sitosterol are two health products for the relief of prostate problems. They have also been shown to be effective and much less expensive than their pharmaceutical counterparts.
Natural Health Solution: Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto is extracted from the fruit of the American dwarf palm tree and grows in the coastal regions of North and South Carolina, Florida, California, and in the Caribbean. It is one of the most popular natural dietary supplements in the world.
It is said to work by decreasing the level of hormones that cause the prostate to grow. Saw palmetto appears to be similar in effectiveness to medications used for an enlarged prostate like finasteride, but it is better tolerated and less costly. It does not reduce sexual function or cause dizziness like certain prostate medications. In fact, there are no reported side effects with natural supplement saw palmetto and it has no known drug interactions. Saw Palmetto extract is rich in phytosterols and fatty acids which are good for the health in general.
Several important studies have been conducted involving the use of saw palmetto in the relief of prostate problems. A double-blind British study treated 110 outpatients with BPH (Benign prostate hypertrophy). Half the patients were treated twice a day with 160 mg of saw palmetto extract and half received a placebo. The symptoms of those who were treated with saw palmetto significantly improved as compared to those receiving a placebo. In addition, the patients who were treated with saw palmetto experienced a significant decrease in nightly urination and post-void residual urination and a significant increase in urinary flow.
Health Supplement: Beta-Sitosterol
Beta-sitosterol is a phytosterol or plant alcohol that is found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. It is becoming a popular treatment in the management of BPH symptoms. Beta-sitosterol is said to bind to the prostate which helps reduce inflammation. It has also been reported to reduce post-void residual urinary output and increase urinary flow in patients with BPH.
Research indicates that beta-sitosterol is a highly effective treatment for this condition. In an important 1995 double-blind study published in the Lancet, 200 men with BPH were treated with either pure beta-sitosterol or a placebo over the course of a year, and the men who received beta-sitosterol showed significant improvement in symptoms and in urinary flow.
The use of natural supplements saw palmetto or beta-sitosterol to treat BPH may be a safe and effective alternative to surgery or prescription medications.
